✨Cenote Sac actun a must do when you visit Tulum or Playa del Carmen ✨

1. World Record Dimensions
Sac Actun is a global titan in the world of speleology (the study of caves):
Size: It is the second-longest underwater cave system in the world (surpassed only by Sistema Ox Bel Ha) and the longest in Mexico.
Length: It stretches over 380 kilometers (236 miles).
Depth: While the average depth is around 21 meters (69 feet), it reaches a maximum depth of approximately 120 meters (394 feet).
Connectivity: In 2018, researchers discovered a connection between Sac Actun and the Dos Ojos system, effectively merging them into one giant network.

2. "The Most Important Submerged Archaeological Site"
Because the caves were once dry during the last Ice Age (before sea levels rose and flooded them around 9,000 years ago), they contain perfectly preserved treasures:
Ancient Humans: The system holds some of the oldest human remains in the Americas. The most famous is "Naia," the skeleton of a teenage girl dating back roughly 13,000 years.
Extinct Mega-Fauna: Divers have found fossils of Ice Age animals including giant sloths, mastodons, gomphotheres (extinct elephant-like creatures), and prehistoric bears.
Mayan Sacred Site: For the ancient Maya, these caves were portals to Xibalba (the underworld). Archaeologists have found Mayan pottery, wall etchings, and even a shrine dedicated to the god of commerce.

3. Ecological Significance
Freshwater Source: The system is part of a massive aquifer that provides the primary source of fresh water for the region.
Cenotes: There are over 220 cenotes (natural sinkholes) that serve as entrances to the system. These are critical for the local ecosystem, allowing roots from the jungle above to reach the water.

Biodiversity: The cave is home to unique species, including the blind cave fish and various types of stygobitic crustaceans that have evolved to live in total darkness
